In this four part series we will unlock the mystery, the meaning and the magnificence of the weekly haftorah. Each week will include a close reading of a Biblical text.
The first class will look at the why. When did the Jews start to read prophetic writings in the synagogue? What does it mean to make a biblical reading into liturgy? Our text will be the haftorah of the 8th day of Passover from the book of Isaiah.
The second class will look at the how. What are the rules and laws surrounding the chanting of a haftorah? Why do b'nai mitzvah celebrate by changing haftorah? Our text will be the haftorah of the second day of Rosh Hashanah from the book of Jeremiah.
The third class will look at the who. Which biblical books were selected and which were left out. Our text will be Ezekiel the haftorah of the shabbat of Pesach.
The fourth class will look at the what. What is the haftorah's purpose? What message are they trying to get across to the Jewish people? Our text will be Second Isaiah the haftorah for Yom Kippur morning.
