United Synagogue Youth is an organization for Jewish teens from across North America to meet each other, hang out together, and make lifelong friendships while learning about and experiencing Judaism. USY is sponsored by the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism and is open to Jewish youth in grades 9-12.
The Neve Shalom chapter ordinarily meets twice a month on Monday evenings at 7:30. Some of the programs that USY has run in the past include sports night, a lock-in sleepover, laser tag, a Chanukah party, apple picking, and an auction for tzedaka . Neve Shalom also sponsors a co-ed basketball team which participates in the regional USY basketball league.
Additionally, our chapter actively participates in programs offered by the Hagalil region and International USY. Each year the region holds three major conventions (Fall Kinus, Midwinter Kinus and Spring Kinus), a Leadership Training weekend, dances, Great Adventure Day and a week of camp at the end of August (Encampment).
International USY sponsors a convention held at the end of December attended by more than 1000 teenagers from all over the United States and Canada. It also sponsors a variety of summer programs including USY on Wheels which is a cross-country bus trip, and USY Israel Pilgrimage. International USY also runs USY High, a high school program in Israel, and NATIV, a yearlong study program in Israel.
Kadima is a synagogue-based, international youth program for Jewish youth in grades 6-8. It is sponsored by the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism and offers programs through Neve Shalom and other affiliated congregations. The Hagalil Region offers a variety of programs for synagogue Kadima groups throughout Northern and Central New Jersey.
The Neve Shalom chapter ordinarily meets twice a month on Monday evenings at 7:30. Some of the programs that Kadima has run in the past include scavenger hunts, game nights, arts and crafts activities, chocolate seders, Jewish Jeopardy, and Make Israel in Ice Cream. Neve Shalom also sponsors a co-ed basketball team which participates in the regional Kadima basketball league.
Additionally, our chapter actively participates in programs offered by the Hagalil region. Each year the region holds Shabbat overnights (Shabbatons), dances, social programs such as fun day, game night, and rollerskating, Great Adventure Day, an 8th grade Shabbaton, a Spring Convention and a week of camp at the end of August (Encampment).
Hanoar is Neve Shalom’s youth group for children in grades 4 and 5. Hanoar is open to Jewish children whether or not their families are members of Neve Shalom.
Hanoar meets twice a month, usually on Sunday mornings from 12:00 to 1:00. Nearly all the events are held at the synagogue, but one or two activities each year are planned off-site. Hanoar programming runs the gamut from juggling workshops to talent shows to parent/kid game shows to sports and art activities. Off-site events have included roller skating, swimming and visits to a sports complex. Approximately half of the activities have Jewish themes; the others are more social in nature.
